Course Offerings & Progressive Curriculum

Classes generally meet once a week and run continually throughout the academic year organized by terms running approximately 10-12 weeks in length. Our curriculum and projects are designed to present a progressing level of skill and challenge so that students can gain the most out of our program. Our small class size and individualized instruction allows you to join at any time.

Getting Ready I

 4 - 6 Years Old
An introduction to representational drawing geared to the attention span and motor coordination of a 4 and 5 year old. Students work on their ability to recognize the elements of shape and combine them in drawing the creatures from nature and objects from their world.

Getting Ready II

 4 - 6 Years Old
A class for 4-6 year olds who have mastered the ability to recognize the elements of shape and have achieved a skill level that allows them to make independent choices in composition and background ideas. Geared for the student who has learned to focus and concentrate for the one hour class, without an undue need for individual attention.

Basic - Spanish Emersion

 4 - 8 Years Old
This class is geared for students 5-8 who are interested in a combination of learning Spanish and drawing. The class will be taught in Spanish with alot of repetition in the elements of shape and the subject matter of each class. Our instructor is a native speaker who has a wonderful calming way about him and who is also a talented artist. Suitable for students 5-9.

Angry Bird Class - One Day only

Okay..Martin Luther Kings birthday is coming up and many kids will be out of school. We are offering a 3 hour ANGRY BIRD class on Monday, January 16th from 1-4pm. Kids will learn how to draw many of the characters from the Angry Birds video game as well as pigs, crates and all the fun obstacles they encounter. Supplies are included. Class is discounted to $30.00 for the one time event. Suitable for students 5-8, but older students who LOVE Angry Birds will enjoy it as well. Class will fill at 15 students.

Basic Drawing I

 6 - 8 Years Old

Students quickly learn to recognize the elements of shape and are introduced to various choices of how to interpret the lesson, their own creative rendering of the subject and background.

Basic Drawing II

 6 - 8 Years Old
A class for 6-8 year olds who have mastered the ability to make independent choices in the interpretation of the lesson, show a confidence in their drawing skills, and can color in with control. Geared for the student who has learned to focus and concentrate for the one hour class and shows the ability to put effort into their work.

Homeschool - Basic Drawing

 6 - 8 Years Old
Introduction to drawing skills for 6-8 year olds. This class will highlight beginning perspective and figure drawing as well as numerous animal projects. Watercolor, pastel, graphite, colored pencils and markers. The curriculum for this class encompasses over 2 years of different lessons.

Denton - After School

This Basic drawing class is geared for students 6-8 years old and takes place at a studio/home environment in Denton. Class meets on Wednesday afternoons beginning on January 11th for eight weeks and tuition is $150.00 including supplies. Monart award winning curriculum, but will be slightly modified in our medium usage.

Drawing Fundamentals

 8 - 12 Years Old
An introduction to representational drawing geared to the attention span and motor coordination of an 8 to 12 year old. Students will learn the Elements of Shape and how to use them in creating drawings from a variety of realistic, abstract, and expressionistic styles. Lessons will introduce them to inspirations from 2Dimensional graphic materials, 3Dimensional objects, the human form, perspective, and proportion.

Intermediate Drawing

 8 - 12 Years Old
A class for 8-12 year olds who have achieved the skill level of working independently on projects, rarely needing a step by step demonstration by the teacher. Geared for the student who has mastered the basic skills in line, shape, proportion, perspective, and the ability to create volume through light logic, using 3 dimensional objects. Can stay focused and concentrated for a 2 hour class and is confident enough to explore various subject matter and live models with comfort. Some work with clay may be added as well.

Photoshop - computers

Have you ever wondered how Photoshop works? Well, this weekly hourly class will give you the skill set needed to manipulate images on your Mac or PC. An additional lab fee will be required per student.

Cartooning

 8 - 12 Years Old
Want to make your own cartoon characters or learn to illustrate cartooning? This weekly hour and a half class will explore the loose characters of the cartooning relm as well as help you illustrate your own comic book.

Open Workshop

 8 - 12 Years Old
Open studio hours for students who are interested in working on portfolio pieces, some instruction given. Basic studio supplies available. Students must bring their own canvases and acrylics/oils/and brushes. Students sign up for the semester for one hour of instruction and one hour of studio time each week. Some guest artists will visit and teach during these sessions.

Flash for computers

 8 - 12 Years Old
Flash is a modifying and animating tool used by MAC and PC users. If you'd like to learn how to make images dance across your computer screen, this weekly hour and a half class will give you the tools needed to become proficient in Flash. You are required to bring your own laptop computer to class and an additional lab fee may be required.

Writing and Illustrating

 8 - 12 Years Old
Learn to write and illustrate your own compositions. This is for all students ages 10 and above including adults. Students will learn about story structure, character development and plot lines. Students will be encouraged to bring their imaginations to life! For beginners and intermediate writing students.

Architectural Rendering

 8 - Adult
Architectural Rendering in Pencil/Pen. Students will learn about some of the great masters in Architecture and do 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional drawings. Some off site classes will be done as we sketch some of the landmarks of Keller. Frank Lloyd Wright, Frank Gehry, IM Pei and Gaudi are some of the masters we will learn about. This is an hour and a half weekly class.

Advanced Computing

 8 - Adult
Advanced flash animation instruction for students who have already taken Flash. Detailed instruction on interactive animation, more sound bites and interactivity. Small class size with lots of individualized attention. Billy Mabrey is the instructor. Great Life skill to have for students interested in digital arts.

Photoshop - short term

 8 - Adult
Photoshop -- Learn to manipulate your own photo\'s in our computer Photoshop class. Change the background, sharpen images, add images, insert images -- the program is incredible but it takes practice to learn some of the short cuts in Photoshop. Never take a bad picture again! Laptop is suggested, but you don\'t have to have one. This special 9 week class is $250.00. For students age 8 and older.

Acrylic/Watercolor Workshop

 8 - Adult
Our hour and a half workshop allows you time to complete a few masterpieces. Instruction given in watercolors and acrylics. Supplies included. Use this time to create and develop your own personal style. Some guided lessons given. For beginners and advanced artists. For students 11 and older - adult. Larger canvases can be brought in at personal cost. Great for the student wanting to work on a portfolio. Classes meet Spring term Sundays 1:30-3:00p full term

Young Illustrators

 8 - Adult
Do you enjoy drawing in pencil and pen? Are you addicted to it and want to learn more? You may be heading for a career in illustration. Take your summer reading homework as a subject matter and explore new ways to express characters/action/place/style. This is sort of a book club for drawing geeks. This class is geared for students 8 and older only. Perspective, light and innovative subject matters will be covered in this weekly summer class.

Cartooning - Home School

 8 - 12 Years Old
Learn how to draw your favorite cartoons. In addition to learning how to exaggerate gestures, facial expressions, movement and how to build a cartoon, we\'ll actually produce our own cartoon cell. Learn more about this fascinating industry and how it is changing. Students will be encouraged to come up with their own comic strip. For students 8 and older only.

An advanced offering of Flash II animation for those students who have already taken Flash I. Approval of instructor needed for students who have not previously taken Flash I from Monart. Suitable for students 8 and older.

Painting - Homeschool

Acrylic Painting for students 10 and older. This class is geared for our homeschoolers who have completed at least two semesters of our Drawing Fundamentals drawing program. Basic color theory and blending will be stressed in this low-stress class. Finished art pieces almost weekly. Classes meet on Thursdays from 11:00a-12:30p.

CLAY - hand modeling

 8 - 12 Years Old
Clay Modeling - twice a week clay modeling with Nora Richtman. Students will learn about different glazes and firing techniques as well as manipulating clay into beautiful sculpture pieces. Class meets on Mondays and Wednesdays 4:30-6:00p 9 weeks of classes January 2 to February 29th. $375.00 with supply fee included. Students 8 and older.

Figure Drawing

Homeschool - Teen

A special two hour class for students who are 13+ who want to enhance their artistic abilities in drawing and painting. Different artistic mediums will be explored. This class meets for two hours each week. This class will begin October 6th - 2010 for seven weeks only. Especially geared for students who are interested in learning more about drawing, usage of colored pencils, graphite, watercolors, chalk and oil pastels, and markers. Introduction into perspective, architecture work and the human body.

Fashion Illustration

Fashion Illustration and Design -- If you've got a budding fashion designer in your home this is the class for them. This new illustration class will cover history of fashion, discuss different designers, how to make a fashion board, learn body shapes and what flatters each shape, discuss patterns and fabrics and how to deconstruct a t-shirt and make their own design. We'll finish the class with a Fashion Show. Classes will meet March 22-May 10 4:00p-5:30p on Thursdays weekly. Class is one hour and a half each week. For students 10 and older - this class is not appropriate for children 8-9. Must have at least 6 students to present the class. Tuition $160.00

Needlepoint and Design

I\'ve had so many comments on my needlework designs here at the studio that I\'ve decided to teach a class on basic needlework and how to paint your own needlepoint canvas. Basic canvas, needles and some yarn will be supplied, but additional specialized yarns may be required depending on the designs that you do. For adults and teens - 13 and older.

Creative Writing - Homeschool

Do you have stories bursting to be told? A student who reads all the time and drinks from good books? Then, our creative writing class for teens may be a perfect fit for you. Instructor, Lois Frazier, is an author who constantly is digging into the next story. Students will learn the components of writing, building a story outline, character biographies, importance of the story arc, and how to develop good conflict. Telling the story and getting students to write on a regular basis will be our motivation. We will not spend alot of time on grammar or sentence structure. Homework is involved. For students 10 and older.
